Resveratrol, quercetine and other polyphenols

Polyphenols are nutrients that are only found in plants and plant-based foods, especially in vegetables, fruit, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, pulses, coffee, and tea.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol that is found especially in red grapes, red wine, berries, cocoa, and peanuts.

Resveratrol is a phytoalexin. Phytoalexins are substances that plants produce to protect themselves against fungi, viruses, bacteria, insects, and ultraviolet radiation.

Quercetin is also a polyphenol, more specifically a flavonoid, that is found especially in red onions, apples, grapes, berries, green and black tea, and red wine.

Resveratrol occurs in food in several forms: trans-resveratrol, cis-resveratrol, and dihydro-resveratrol. Trans-resveratrol is the most common. It is also more stable and has the strongest effect. Cis-resveratrol, which is less stable, is broken down faster into metabolites in the intestines. Dihydro-resveratrol is a metabolite of cis- and trans-resveratrol. All these forms of resveratrol work together and their metabolites are important, too.

Benfida Resveratrol plus contains a combination of standardised resveratrol-rich plant extracts obtained from Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) and grape seed (Vitis vinifera). These whole plant extracts contain resveratrol in all its forms, as well as many other polyphenols and flavonoids, which produce a stronger and more multifaceted effect in combination.

Benfida Resveratrol plus also contains quercetin in the form of easily absorbable Quercefit®. Quercetin is easier to absorb when eaten with oily or fatty foods. Quercefit® is a patented extract in which quercetin is bonded to phospholipids. These are oily substances that can be incorporated into all of the body’s cells. Binding quercetin to phospholipids creates what is known as a phytosome, a compound that is easily absorbed into the cells in which the quercetin is released.
